Brenda Smith and Minh Anh (The boy they called fish) – Saigon zoo – 14 August 2014

Brenda Smith, a British grandmother has been returning to Vietnam for the last 20 years to visit ‘Ca’ (‘Fish’ from the boy they called fish documentary) from when he was just 3 years old and through those years, they have formed a mother-son relationship. ‘Ca’ has been affected by a rare skin condition which has worsen over the years. Moved by the sheer determination from a British grandmother to find happiness for ‘Ca’, we asked Brenda if there was anywhere she would take him, where would it be? She simply replied “The zoo” and with that said, Fundraise For Vietnam granted her wish as our way of saying a massive thank you for being the mother to ‘Ca’ he never had for the last 20 years. Your donation breakdown for the zoo are as follows:

Zoo ticket entry: 2 x 20k =40k
Zoo tour: 2 x15k = 30k
Lipton ice tea = 15k
Popcorn = 10k
Pot noodles = 12k
Ice cream: 2 x 20k = 40k
Water: 2 x 10k = 20k
Total = 167 k (approximately £5)

It’s great to see ‘Ca’ outside of the hospital and really enjoying himself. It was a shame he got tired so quickly which resulted in us taking him back earlier than expected as we had a whole day planned for him. The strong bond over the years between Brenda and ‘Ca’ is truly remarkable and whilst walking back to the hospital, we asked him where his mother was and he pointed at Brenda. Our hearts melted.
