Quang Chau temple -29 July 2014

We visited a temple in Da Nang called Quang Chau where it takes in abandoned children. There has been severe cases where new born babies are left at the front of the temple or are found
wrapped in bins. The monk has currently taken over 100 children and over 60 babies which means milk and nappies are always essential. When there is a low supply of milk, the number of meals for the babies are reduced. It’s heartbreaking news for us to hear and after our first visit, we were at the temple again with milk, nappies, baby bottle teats and baby mittens. Please find below a breakdown of how your donation has been used:

– 8 tubs of milk powder x 534,625 VND = 4,277,000 VND
– 6 Pampers Jumbo nappies x 229k VND = 1,374,000 VND
– 27 baby mittens x 15,820 VND = 427,140 VND
– 17 baby bottle teats x 20k VND = 340,000 VND

Total = 6,418,140 VND (approximately £179)

From our trip to the temple, we were quick to question why mothers would give up their child but after spending time with the locals and the monk, the mystery began to unravel itself. There seems to be a number of reasons why mothers would give up their child such as due to a lack of sex education to the teenagers which leads to pregnancy at an early age, women in their late twenties feeling they need to settle down due to society making them feel old and not wanted and only resulting in their partner leaving them, poor families not able to support the newborn baby, etc. Whatever the reason may be, we must not point fingers at anyone but to work together and look at ways to help support the newborn. Together there is hope.
